Alternate Numbers

Sometimes a loco/unit has more than one number, this can include:

  • A loco being renumbered during its lifetime, for example 47580

    • Original number when new "D1762"
    • Renumbered to "47167" for TOPS in 1973
    • Renumbered to "47580" when converted to 47/4 in 1980

  • A unit having a shorter number on the unit ends, for example the class 458 units have numbers 458001 - 458536 but carry short numbers 8001 - 8536 on the ends
  • Preserved loco's which may carry any of the numbers a loco carried during its pre-preservation life.  For example Jubilee "Kolhapur" carried "5593" in the LMS number scheme and "45593" under BR. As it is a mainline certified loco, it also has a TOPS number "98693", although you are unlikely to see this on the loco.

Spotlog calls these "Alternate Numbers" and allows any number of alternate numbers to be set for a loco.  When spotting a loco/unit the "main number" or any of the alternate numbers are recognised and may be entered to match the loco.

  • The number shown in the class list, and at the top of the loco page in the book is referred to as the "Main Number".
  • Any other numbers are referred to as "Alternate Numbers" (sometimes "AltNums").
  • The main number or any of the alternate numbers may be used to spot the loco, and will be recognised by the app.
  • The main number is generally the number currently carried by the loco/unit.
  • In some sets (eg UK70) the main number will be the number last carried by the loco/unit when it left BR Service.
  • A loco/unit may have different main numbers in different sets, for example some preserved diesels may be listed in UK, UK70 and UKP and may be listed with different main numbers in each set.  It doesn't matter, Spotlog knows they are all the same loco.

Some items are also listed with an EVN - European Vehicle Number - see EVN and UIC Numbers
