EVN and UIC numbers

In some countries (mostly European and not in UK) loco's, units etc are numbered with a 12 digit number - the "European Vehicle Number" (EVN).  This number is in a specific format and includes the loco's home country, owner, type (Loco/Wagon etc).  You can read more about EVN at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UIC_identification_marking_for_tractive_stock

EVNs are sometimes referred to as UIC numbers.

The EVN includes a check digit which is used to verify the correct entry of the number.

Some other railways use a partial form of the EVN on the loco, where just the last six or seven digits plus the checksum are painted on the loco.

Some wagons operating in the UK carry the full EVN.

EVN numbers

In SpotLog the loco data includes the EVN number where appropriate.

By default, the EVN is not shown in the class list (example DE class 101)

but can be seen on the loco detail page

If you prefer, you can turn on EVN in the book section of  Settings ("Prefer EVN in book") in which case SpotLog will show the EVN on the class page instead of the shorter number:

Notes:

  • The "short number" shown is the last six or seven digits of the EVN plus the checksum
  • You can enter either the short number or the full EVN in the notepad and SpotLog will match the record

UIC Checksums

Some railways (European) show the UIC number with a checksum on the loco/unit. For example this SBB class 460 locomotive:

the number is made up of:

  • class number 460
  • individual loco 022
  • check digit 7

The check digit is calculated from the full EVN using a defined formula.

When entering numbers you can enter either "460 022" or "460 022-7" and SpotLog will recognise the entry and log the record against 460 022. (If you have "Accept UIC numbers without space" enabled in Settings (see below) SpotLog will also accept "460022" and "460022-7" as valid matches).

It is recommended to enter the check digit where possible, as this verifies the number has been recorded correctly.

Settings that effect EVN and checksum

  • Prefer EVN in Book: sets the book to show the full EVN rather than the "short number" where the EVN is in the data
  • Accept UIC numbers without space: allows you to enter a UIC number without the space, eg "101001-6" instead of "101 001-6"
