Entry Mode
When you enter numbers in the NotePad (see Entering Numbers) SpotLog has different modes for entry:
- Realtime
- Deferred
- Undated
You can select the entry mode using the picklist at the top of the entry key pad.
You can select your preferred entry mode to be the default mode when the app opens using Settings
Realtime mode
Realtime mode is the "standard" way of Entering Numbers and will be the default mode unless you have changed the default in Settings.
In realtime mode, when you enter a number, SpotLog creates a record with the current date and time. You can edit the date and time using Edit Record if required.
Deferred mode
Deferred mode is when you want to enter records with a date and time other than the current date/time, for example if you record numbers using a pen and paper and then enter them into SpotLog at the end of the day, or if you are entering historic records from old notebooks. (if you are doing a lot of this, consider using Import and Export to import numbers in bulk.)
In deferred mode, when you enter a number, SpotLog immediately opens the Edit Record form so that you can enter the date and time for the record: set the required date and time and click "update" - the record is then processed as normal (see Matching).
If you are entering multiple records using deferred mode, the first entry will have the current date and time when the form opens, subsequent entries will have the last entered date and time.
For example:
- Select "Deferred" mode
- Enter first number: SpotLog shows the record with the current date and time: edit the date to (eg) "12/07/1985" and tap "update"
- Enter second number: now when SpotLog shows the edit record form, the date will be "12/07/1985"
- etc
Undated mode
Use undated mode when you wish to record that you have seen a loco/unit but are not concerned (or don't have) the date and time. See Undated Records.
In "Undated" mode, when you enter a number, SpotLog marks the item in the book as seen (photo/haul etc) but does not create a log record: undated mode records do not show in the Log
