SpotLog Voice Recording

SpotLog has a voice recording function - this is intended for situations where numbers are coming too fast to enter them normally through the keypad, and you want to just read our the numbers as you see them.

Another situation where it can be useful is if you want to record numbers and take photo's at the same time, you can have your SpotLog device in a pocket recording numbers you read out while you're hands are free to work the camera.

To Record

To make a recording,

  • Tap the "Rec" button (IOS) or "Record" button (Android) on the keypad.
  • The button changes to "Stop"
  • You are recording - speak into the device microphone
  • When you have finished recording, tap the "Stop" button to stop the recording.

SpotLog saves the recording on your device and adds a entry for the recording to the NotePad list - the entry saves the time and location details as for a normal record.

To Play back a recording

To play back a recording you use the play / pause / stop /rewind buttons below the recording in the notepad.  The recording will play through the device speaker or earphones.

On IOS there is also a "repeat" button, if you press repeat, the recording will play continually until stopped.

While the recording plays, the notepad time, location and notes are set to whatever they were when the recording was made. This means that any numbers you enter while the recording plays will be recorded in SpotLog as the time when the recording was made.  Thus it does not matter how long after the event you transcribe the recording - the numbers will be shown in the log at the correct time and in the correct order.

Approx five seconds after the recording stops SpotLog will revert the NotePad number/location back to the values they had before the recording was played.

An example might help:

Example

It's 0930 and I'm on a moving train, we're about to pass a depot and I know I'm not going to be able to type in the numbers fast enough.  I type the depot name into the Location box.

I start the recording: as we pass the depot I read out the numbers I see.  Once passed the depot, I stop the recording.

My NotePad view shows

0930  Recording   Atown Depot

I carry on with my spotting as usual.

Later, maybe when I get home, or when it's quiet.

Time is 1720

I plug in my earphones, and play the recording, SpotLog sets the NotePad to "0930" and "Atown Depot".

The first number on the recording is 47034 - I key in "47034" on the NotePad keypad and press "Enter" - SpotLog records 47034 as at time 0930 and location "Atown Depot"

I carry on with the recording (probably on loop) until I have entered all the numbers from the recording.

When I stop the recording (plus five seconds) SpotLog removes 0930 and the location from the NotePad entry.

Hints and more detail

  • While playing back recordings, SpotLog adds numbers to the NotePad - but does not process them into the Log until the recording ends - this makes it easier to check if you have transcribed all the numbers from the recording.
  • Playing recordings on loop is helpful to transcribe all the numbers.
